Understand first, then decide.

Two calculations to see the effect of time on money, and a few useful rules on savings and protection. They are educational tools with simple, stated assumptions: they do not replace advice on your own situation.

What is idle money worth tomorrow?

In 10 years, €10,000 will buy roughly what €8,203 buys today.

You would need about €12,190 to buy the same things.

Monthly saving: a simulation over time

Paid in€36,000
Hypothetical value€41,943

Assumptions and limits

  • Return and inflation are constant and chosen by you: they are not forecasts.
  • Costs, fees, taxes and market fluctuations are not taken into account.
  • The results are indicative and help you understand the effect of time, not choose a product.
  • They are not a personal recommendation: that requires advice on your own situation.

The calculations run in your browser: no data is saved or sent.

  1. Inflation works quietly.

With average inflation of 2% a year, €100,000 left idle in a current account for twenty years ends up with the purchasing power of about €67,000 today.

    Calculation: €100,000 ÷ 1.02 to the power of 20

  2. Deposits are protected, up to a limit.

Money in a current account is guaranteed by the Italian Interbank Deposit Protection Fund up to €100,000 per depositor, per bank.

Legislative Decree 30/2016, implementing Directive 2014/49/EU

  3. Your securities don't belong to the bank.

Clients' financial instruments and money form assets separate from the bank's own: the bank's creditors cannot claim them.

Art. 22 of the Italian Consolidated Law on Finance (Legislative Decree 58/1998)

  4. Life insurance follows its own rules in succession.

The sums a life insurance policy pays to its beneficiaries are theirs by their own right: they are not part of the estate and are not subject to inheritance tax. Each contract should still be assessed carefully.

Art. 1920 of the Italian Civil Code; art. 12 of Legislative Decree 346/1990

  5. A pension fund also saves you tax.

Contributions to a supplementary pension scheme are deductible from total income, up to the yearly limit set by law.

Art. 8 of Legislative Decree 252/2005
